With summer in full swing and the mercury heating up day by day, it can be a bit of a daunting prospect to get your seniors out of the house and into the fresh air for fun and frivolity. Summers are great in the sense that there are a lot of fantastic events going on in almost every community across the country, so there is always something to do or somewhere to go for a bit of a day out - even just for a few hours.

Last month we covered how to keep seniors safe in the summer heat, so always be sure to practice safety when it comes to the sun and higher temperatures, especially as seniors can be more sensitive to temperatures than younger people. For a quick recap on things to keep in mind here are a couple of bullet points:

-        Make sure to keep hydrated

-        Wear long clothing/hats to prevent sunburn

-        Wear sunscreen

-        Restrict time in the sun, especially during midday between 11-3

So what are some great senior friendly activities you can explore over the summer months? Here are a couple of great suggestions:

County or Local Fairs

These are a great way to get out and enjoy the summer weather while having a bit of fun too. Fairs - especially those that have been around for decades - can bring back fond memories of childhood for your clients, which can have a fantastic effect on their mental well being.

 Picnics, Barbecues, Community Days

Like county or local fairs, these options for days out can be hugely popular and beneficial for seniors socially, mentally and activity wise. Getting out into the community to partake in events or picnics with neighbors and friends is fun for anyone, but especially for seniors who may not get out frequently to see other people. The bonus is that at events like this there are usually great food options too, so it’s win-win!

Baseball Games

Whether baseball is a favorite sport for your clients or not, it can be hugely enjoyable to visit the local team diamond and take in a game. If you don’t have a local team to enjoy, why not considering taking them to watch their grandchildren play a game or two?

Speaking of Grandchildren…

Summer is a great time for seniors to reconnect with their grandkids in a number of ways. Chances are they will want to organize an event or visit sometime over the summer and you can help with that easily by helping plan activities that are child and senior friendly.
